In the modern world, it is not uncommon for a guardian, or parents, to go overseas in order to work, and in so doing, are accompanied by their family members. In my opinion, though there may be drawbacks from this in relation to family development, overall, I believe the positives are greater.

One of the main advantages of being accompanied overseas when a parent relocates abroad for a job is that this situation allows for the family unit to remain together. Psychologically, this scenario is normally considered paramount in terms of child socialization and growth, as the young person, despite needing to settle in a new environment, will have the continuity of parental contact and emotional support. With parental oversight, the child will then be able to reap the benefits of adapting to a new culture, language, and people, and as such, these circumstances can incur an upbringing that most children will not experience, giving the youngster an advantage in later life.

There are, however, some dangers for family development from children joining a parent, or parents, overseas, namely that the child will feel displaced and that it may produce a sense of detachment. This detachment from one’s normal environment may cause off-spring unwanted angst and stress; likewise, the same could be said for a spouse. Nevertheless, these risks of feeling isolated and having increased levels of anxiety, though they can be debilitating for the sufferer, the alternative of being separated for extended periods of time from a loved one, such as a husband and father, can be even more devastating for both the spouse and the child.

In conclusion, in spite of the elevated risks for both spouse and child from being uprooted from their normal environment, in my opinion, the benefits of traveling or migrating overseas to accompany a family member more than likely outweigh any negative impact that may be felt, since the situation can ensure the integrity of the family unit, and additionally, can be a culturally rewarding experience.
